Learning about foreign cultures through dress up games

Learning about foreign cultures through dress up games

We may love travelling around the world to know more about other cultures in the world. You wonder what they eat, how they wear, when they celebrate their own holidays and so on. When you have chance to go to those places, you can experience the cultures yourself. You can have many stories to tell your friends, and even buy souvenirs for them. You would be the luckiest person to have good chances like that.

If you cannot travel, because sometimes travelling cost a lot of money, you can think of watching films, maybe documentary films or dramas. Through the contexts situations of the films, you can imagine what happen in real life, not just the present days, films can also track back to old days, when the cultures are not only varied between regions, they also differentiate through periods of time.

The problem of films is sometimes they do not keep the facts completely but dramatize them. Or sometimes by the stories in the films, you are distracted from viewing the cultural aspect in them. In the end, you want to rewind the stage and see the film more clearly but it is difficult to do this.

You can buy magazines or books, a great source of useful information. But it does not take effect in every instance. For people who are not very patient, they will easily put the books down at the middle. Or for young children, they have not learnt to read, there is no point in teaching them about cultures in this way.

Surprisingly, everyone can try dress up games, which can present some feature aspects of culture. The most visible everyone can realize is the chance to learn about clothes and costumes in these games. Surfing around in a dress up games website, you can enjoy different dress up style, you will distinguish between Romanian traditional customs and Japanese one because the Romanian girl will obviously wear differently from a Japanese girl. Similarly, through game Fashion Ukrainian Girl, you can be given different taste and impression than a modern and dynamic American girl in a catwalk show.

Dress up games usually include in them music which are played along with the theme of the game. You can hear the sound and tone of the music change from a game to another. That, after all, reflects the diverse cultural matters.

In games, players can see some particular traditional events that show particular cultural characteristics. For example, in Christmas games or Thanks giving games, you may not only be required to make up and dress up the model, you may also have to arrange the room, decorate the tree or draw the eggs and wait for the special moment. Thus, you can have special feeling as if you were attending the real occasion at the game’s time. Another example is the farm games, in which you can experience the true working day like a real farmer, with farming outfits and agricultural equipments that look strange and not like what you see in your countries.

Love and Order

Author: ? (Seriously, why is it so hard to find credits for these things? If this were my game, I'd want my name all over it!)

Availability: Demo/$19.99 Full Version, Download

Format: Management Sim / Dating Sim

Genre: Mystery / Workplace Romance

Rating: Teen

My Scores: (Writing: 4, Art: 4.9, Gameplay: 4) out of 5

Found at http://www.otomegames.com or http://www.winterwolves.com/

Summary:

In Love and Order, you are Dana Larose, a young woman who just started work as a secretary for the understaffed Crown Attorney's office in a small district in Montreal. In addition to your demanding job and cute coworkers, there's a very mysterious case file that draws your attention.

Review:

Writing:

Right away, I found things to love in this game. It's set in Canada, which is a nice and original change from the usual settings (see other reviews for more ranting on the subject), and enough flavor is given that this actually seems like "Canada" and not "Japan with a name-change". So hooray for that! Also, I liked the little rip-off of the "Law & Order" intro. It was silly, but I liked it.

The game proper made me feel like I was actually in an attorney's office. Granted, I know very little about law and how law offices actually work, so take that assessment with a grain of salt. Still, it was more than enough for my Suspension of Disbelief to work with. What's more, I found it hilarious and, in a way, realistic how the cases your office was handling weren't glamorous cases like "The People vs. Bob 'The Decapitator' McKiller" or "The People vs. Bob McWronglyAccusedForMurderButNobodyBelievesHimNotEvenHisMother". Instead, your office handles cases like "Man accused of harassing chickens." Ladies and gentlemen, the legal system at work.

Art:

The art here is very good and well drawn, though maybe the border lines around two of the boys' hair could use a little cleaning up. The "Change location" screen contains a map that's justified in-game, which I thought was a very nice touch. Also, you can change outfits, which is somewhere between nice and pointless.

Gameplay:

Having only played the demo, I'm reluctant to give an official score on the gameplay, but what I've seen so far impresses me. You can request assignments, and sometimes opportunities for new assignments will be given to you. Doing more tasks means getting more money, but it also means more stress which can mean screwing up and failing the task altogether. It's very well balanced, I think.

The one thing that concerns me is the replay value. From what I can tell, the mystery seems pretty straight forward and linear, which means once that's solved, it probably won't need to be solved again. As for the love angle, there are four suitors, and their paths also seem pretty linear. I don't know how many endings are possible, but from here, the possibilities look fairly small. This wouldn't be a problem if the game were freeware, but since it's a commercial game, this is a very serious point to consider: Is a game you only play 4-6 times worth spending $20 on? For some people, the answer might be "Sure, why not?", but for people more like myself, a game has to be something more than just a fleeting experience in order to make me part with my hard-earned money. With Love and Order, I don't know if it can do that for me.

TLDR:

Love and Order is interesting and very well put together. It's one of the better games I've played, and I can completely understand and agree with the authors deciding to make money off of it. It's a high-quality game. What I don't know is if the apparently limited replay value is worth the price they're asking. Of course, it might just be that I'm cheap.

As usual, this is all my own opinion; you might think this game is worth a thousand dollars, or you might feel it needs to be burned and its creators fed to wolverines. Feel free to post your thoughts in the comments section, free of charge. ;)

Skype Microsoft

SEATTLE — Microsoft Corp. is buying Internet phone company Skype Technologies for $8.5 billion.
Microsoft said the acquisition will expand its product offerings, including unified communication software Lync, email software Outlook, instant messaging software Messenger, free Web email Hotmail and online video game network Xbox Live.
Microsoft said Skype will run on its fledgling mobile operating system Windows Phone, Xbox, Kinect and other Windows devices, without being more specific.  Skype will become a new division in Microsoft.

Was software giant Microsoft’s biggest ever aquisition a costly case of verb envy or a shrewd move in the battle to secure the digital future from its rivals Google?

Last week, Skype also became the world's most expensive verb when Microsoft paid $8.5bn (£5.2bn) in cash for a company best known for linking families and friends in online video conversations across the world. Steven Ballmer, Microsoft's ebullient chief executive, could barely contain his excitement at a press conference in San Francisco last week to announce the deal.

Skype's services also span hot markets — online socializing, mobile phones and digital video - where Microsoft has been struggling to catch up with Facebook, Apple and Google.

About 170 million people worldwide who use Skype regularly for calls and chats. Microsoft already has a Skype-like service called Windows Live. But the real Skype is far more popular and bridges different computers and phones. For businesses, Microsoft has separate communications software.

Avoiding big bills

Skype allows users to make voice and video calls for free or pennies. Calls from one Skype account to another are free. Skype users made 207 billion minutes of voice and video calls last year - almost 400,000 years' worth. Only about 5 percent of Skype users pay for it.

Skype users don't have to pay to install the software on Apple's iPhone, iPad computer tablet or devices running on Google's Android system.
The partnership would bring Skype to the Xbox video game console and has sold 50 million copies, making it No. 2 video game system behind the Nintendo Wii.

Verizon 4G Outage

The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE nationwide data network crashed, taking all of the company’s 4G devices with it. One tweet explained that Verizon Wireless was aware that the LTE network was out. Later in the day we were told through another tweet that Verizon Wireless engineers were working to solve the problem. Finally, late in the day, Verizon again tweeted, this time to let the world know that it had found the problem and would try to fix it. Let’s face it. In this day of reasonably modern network management, it’s impossible that Verizon Wireless would be unaware of the outage within a few minutes of when it happened. The problem now, of course, is that speculation is running rampant. On one forum the speculation was that terrorists had hacked into Verizon Wireless, shut down the 4G and had stolen everyone’s phone numbers. One forum user thought maybe Verizon Wireless forgot to plug in the 4G computer.

Company says it has found the cause, plans to restore access market-by-market
The mysterious 4G LTE service outage in the US by Verizon Wireless remains unexplained, but company says that it has identified the cause and is on way to restoring the service market-by-market.
Users of the HTC Thunderbolt and other wireless data cards woke to a high speed broadband outage on 27 April. The new 4G LTE service had gone down to 2G speeds on Verizon's 1X CDMA network. In a Twitter message, the company said, "We're aware of an issue with 4G LTE connections & our network engineers are working to resolve quickly.

Verizon's 4G network was completely crippled all across the country. It was impossible to activate any new 4G phones.
Samsung, the manufacturer of the Droid Charge, is none too happy that Verizon's high-speed network went dark at the same time as the phone's launch. Samsung had poured a lot of money into advertising campaigns for the phone.
The Droid Charge is the first 4G device to carry Verizon's ultra powerful "Droid" name, and it's seen as a critical step in the carrier's 4G repertoire.
